The themes used throughout the DragonBall series' have always been a key element in making DragonBall what it was and still is today. Can you even image watching any of them without their themes, or for that matter, their background music? In fact, the two most common names associated with the series that most fans are familiar with, besides Toriyama Akira, are Kikuchi Shunsuke and Kageyama Hironobu. Needless to say, both men were heavily involved in the musical aspect of the series'. Kikuchi Shunsuke composed the background music for both the DragonBall and DragonBall Z TV series, including their respective movie titles, while Kageyama Hironobu provided the vocals to almost every theme associated with DragonBall Z. Following the completion of DragonBall Z, both men left the series and Tokunaga Akihito was brought on to compose the background music for DragonBall GT, while various J-Pop artists were used for opening and ending themes. Tokunaga Akihito would also go on to compose the background music for the 10th anniversary movie, "The Path to Ultimate Strength". In 2008, the newly animated Jump Anime Tour special featured some recycled background music from DragonBall Z and in the same fashion, also kept "Cha-La Head-Cha-La" as its opening theme. However, the special did get a new ending theme, "Orange Hero", which was the first new ending theme to the series' since DragonBall GT ended in 1997. Later, in early 2009, it was announced that DragonBall Z would be getting a "refreshed" airing, entitled DragonBall Kai. It was also announced that the new series would have new opening and ending themes sung by Tanimoto Takayoshi, along with new background music composed by Yamamoto Kenji.
This guide will hopefully answer all of the questions that you've ever had about the various themes used throughout the DragonBall series'. Though, it should be noted that there is no documentation in this guide concerning either the background music or any of the released musical material that did not appear in the series'.
